A Simple Trick for Backstock
Managing Backstock Inventory in the Home
First things first…what is backstock, exactly?
Backstock refers to multiples we may have purchased in advance. These frequently used items routinely need to be refilled, but because we only need one at a time, it is necessary to store the excess items until ready for use.
Introducing: VISUAL CUES
When you have backstock of an item, to help remember that you already have extras in storage, give yourself a visual reminder by marking the current item-in-use with washi tape* or a sharpie.
*Washi tape is a decorative adhesive that is easily removable, similar to painter’s tape. And there are many fun patterns to choose from!
For example, in the photo above — when there is washi tape at the bottom of the spice jar, you’ll know that you already have backstock red pepper flakes ready for refill.
For other backstock items, like toothpaste, use a sharpie to scribble a small star (or any design of your choice!) on the body of the tube. It will act as an easy and subtle reminder that you do NOT have to run out and purchase more when the last ounce of paste is squeezed! However, if you see no star on the toothpaste, you’ll know that this is the last one in your inventory.
The best part: knowing your inventory means never getting stressed or frantic about running out of items.
Bonus Tips for Storing Backstock:
Store similar backstock items together
Place the items with earliest expiration dates to the front
Remove the outer excess packaging for greater storage flexibility
Reconsider if purchasing items in bulk quantities is necessary, if you are not using it before the expiration date
