Organize Your Cords and Chargers

Choose Your Own Adventure: Electronic cords

Charging cord sits out waiting to be stored and organized efficiently.

Scenario: Your device needs to be recharged.

Option A: You open up your junk drawer or box and are greeted by an overwhelming jumble of tangled cords.

Option B: You frantically search all over the house for the needed charging cable and block. You find one! It’s the wrong one…you keep searching.

Option C: You head directly to your cord & chargers bin and easily identify the cord and block you need. It takes you less than 30 seconds. You charge your device and move on. Life is good.

Save time and energy when you organize your electronic device cords

Get organized in 4 steps:

Step 1: GATHER
Bring every single random cord, cable, or charger out. Search the entire house for them!

Step 2: SORT
Sort similar cords together. You could sort by the type (i.e. all USB-C cords together) or by the device (i.e. Simple Human chargers & cords together).

Step 3: DECLUTTER
Cords come in different lengths, brands, colors, and durability. Decide which ones are your favorite and decide an appropriate quantity, then discard the rest. Do not keep any cable that you have no idea what it’s for, because all it’s doing is taking up space!

*Reminder: electronic cords are considered electrical waste (see below for suggested places to recycle electronic waste in Huntington Beach, CA and Orange County).

Step 4: ORGANIZE
A simple system is best! You want a storage solution that keeps similar cords together and all in one place. Labels are highly suggested.

Helpful Resources & Tools:

  • Not sure the name of a cord? These websites have clear visuals that make it easy to figure out the names of Apple device cables, USB cables and other cords. (Tip: USB-A is often referred to as USB, since it is the most commonly known USB type - if you are a millennial or older).

  • Storage Case set

  • Divided Bin & Wire Ties drawer set

  • Brother P-Touch label maker or Brother P-Touch Cube label maker for more style options

  • Recycle or donate your discarded cords! Here are my favorite places to recycle them in Orange County:

    • Goodwill Southern California - accepts e-waste (anything with a cord or battery) and will safely recycle these items, including your charging cords.

    • OC Hazardous Waste Collection Centers - free for Orange County residents to drop off at any of the 4 collection sites (Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine & San Juan Capistrano).
