The Secret to Keeping Your Home Organized

The Secret: Daily Tidy Resets!

A tidy dinner table at home.

Building small daily tidy reset moments into your day is the key to maintaining your organized space. Read on for tips on how to build these tidy habits into your schedule:

Why daily resets rule:

Nobody wants to spend an entire day or weekend to “picking up” the house. Never have to give up that time again when you do daily tidy resets! And, bonus — doing it daily means it’ll be sooo much faster to get done.

Identify your home’s clutter magnets and messy dump zones

First, let’s get real — no home stays picture-perfect 24/7 because hello, human beings live there! And a home that’s lived in, is so much richer than one that’s not enjoyed! Messy moments happen; our goal is to prevent the mess from compounding. In this step, identify the areas in the home that quickly get messy because they get lived in. These areas (and your mental health) will benefit the most from a daily reset. As you reset your home, make sure every item has a dedicated home. This makes the reset much faster!

// Examples of common messy areas: entryway/mudroom, living room, and countertops.

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

When you first start a new tidy reset habit, it’s important to schedule it into your calendar (just as you would a doctor’s appointment). Consider your routine and schedule, and decide specifically WHEN during your day you can take time to do that area’s tidy reset. When you do the first reset, time yourself — this will give you a good estimate to how long it may take. Consider habit stacking, which is when you complete one habit after another established habit.

// Example: After brushing your teeth at night, you do a 15-minute tidy reset of your living room before heading to bed.

Reset support

Building new habits is tough. Creating a support system of accountability and action is extremely helpful!

  • Enroll other household members in the resets (delegate tasks or take turns doing the resets), especially in shared spaces.

  • Utilize a timer or create a 15-minute or 30-minute playlist on Spotify (Here’s mine!). Starting is often the hardest step, so I find the timer to be crucial in spurring action and getting things rolling. I recently heard the advice, “It only takes one minute to be brave.” Here’s my tidy version: “It only takes one minute to start!”
