Finding my Best Colors

My color story

When I was younger, somewhere along the way, someone told me that “yellow” was not my color and that I shouldn’t wear it. So I avoided it — every shade. Then, some 25+ years later, I was shopping and this sweater caught my eye. The colors just popped out at me, I loved the design, and when I put it on…I just felt brighter. And guess what? The primary color was yellow! And when I wore it, I got compliments. I started to wonder, could yellow actually be my color?

Now, I embrace and love wearing a bright yellow. It has become a staple in my wardrobe and I feel extra confident when I wear it. But, it got me thinking…are there other colors I am missing out on? There were colors that I knew looked better on me than others, but it felt very trial-and-error when I went shopping.

The yellow sweater that turned it all around!

So, when I happened upon Created Colorful two years ago, I was intrigued.

Created Colorful does a virtual color analysis for you and teaches you which are your best colors to wear. At the end of the analysis, you receive a color palette of your best colors, as well as tips for what to look for on the color spectrum and clothing, jewelry, and makeup examples.

This year, I decided to finally purchase a color analysis for myself!  After getting over the initial self-induced awkwardness of taking several selfies with clothing draped over me, sans make-up and hair messily pulled back, I submitted my photos and eagerly waited for my results:

Turns out…I’m a CLEAR WINTER! (see photos below)

Your best colors mantra is BRIGHT, NEUTRAL-COOL, and JEWEL-TONED COLORS.
— Created Colorful

First of all, the Created Colorful team of experts are so sweet.  The emails were personalized and I felt like they pointed out features, styling, and clothing choices that I overlooked in considering for myself.  They are literally your biggest cheerleader!

Secondly, their analysis and helpful tips have allowed me to feel more confident in choosing colors and leaning into what really sparks joy for me.  I’ve been trying to make dusty, lighter colors work for me for a long time…but, it always leaves me looking …well, dusty and dull.  After my color analysis, I said my final “thank you” and goodbye to some clothing that I liked, but kept failing at wearing in a way that made me feel really good.  I did keep some pieces not in my color palette that I could easily pair with other colors that were in my color palette, to brighten things up.  (Created Colorful taught me that the color closest to my face will have the biggest impact).

When I work with clients on joy-checking their own clothing category, one of the intake questions I ask is if they like to wear a favorite color.  And often times, when they do have a favorite color, it is one of the colors that looks best on them.  During the joy-checking process, preferences such as repeat colors, brands, style cuts or patterns emerge and becomes clues for what sparks joy.

I love that the Created Colorful’s objective analysis goes deeper and helps uncover and unlock the joy and confidence of color.  Because how sunny and beautiful is that?! 🌈
